Levels in Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar Method
Classes offered are based upon the teaching of BKS Iyengar whose approach creates a balance between flexibility, strength and endurance with an emphasis on precision of movement and correct body alignment. The practice of Yoga promotes health, vitality, concentration and relaxation through integration of body, mind and spirit.

Introductory
An introduction to the foundation asanas (postures) for all students with no experience of Iyengar Yoga. The first inversion is briefly introduced to allow the student to progress to the next level. One session in Introductory is all that is needed before proceeding to the next level.

Level 1
The Student continues the practice of basic postures and the first inversion is explored more thoroughly. Understanding of breath awareness is introduced which is the foundation of Pranayama. Length of time in Level 1 varies and can be more or less than a year.

Level 2
Students continue to progress with new postures and the first introduction to headstand/other inversions are explored. Students gain more confidence in headstand and the subtleties of more advanced postures are integrated. The study of Pranayama develops here.

Level 3
Now the student begins to mature their practice with the intermediate asanas and continues to work to overcome individual obstacles to practice. Pranayama continues to develop.

Special Needs
Students with particular challenges that do not allow them to be part of a regular class, or students who require individualized work may be placed here. The practice will work more specifically with their condition and allow them to work more independently or return to a regular class with special adaptations.

"The asana is an inquiry: who am I? Throwing out the parts until only the Self is left. The final pose is 'I am'." -- BKS Iyengar
