Remembering Sri BKS Iyengar
December 14, 1918-August 20, 2014

The name Iyengar comes from Yogacharya BKS Iyengar, an internationally renowned yoga master who passed away in August 2014. He was named by TIME magazine as one of the hundred most influential persons of the 21st century (April 2004) and authored many texts on the subject of yoga. He developed his innovative and inspirational approach to hatha yoga after years of dedicated practice and teaching, and study of classical yoga and medical science. Iyengar's approach comes out of the lineage of his teacher, Shri T. Krishnamacharya, a classically trained Hindu scholar and yoga master. Iyengar has guided this ancient art in being transmitted on an international scale, with certified Iyengar yoga teachers in more than seventy countries worldwide.

His daughter Geeta, a dedicated student of her father and significant teacher in her own right, passed December, 2018. Prashant, Guruji’s son, and Abhijata, his granddaughter, continue his legacy, teaching at the Ramamani Iyengar Yoga Institute in Pune, India.

Words fail to convey the true value of Yoga. It has to be experienced.”
